{Generations and Celebrations}

Last month we celebrated my Great-Grandmother’s (a.k.a. “Granny") 93rd birthday! She is still as feisty as ever! Here’s a quick story to give you an idea about how spirited and energetic this lovely lady is. One day, a couple of years back, Granny was complaining about her aching back. My Mom and I asked her if she had been doing anything strenuous that could have given her a backache. She replied, “No. . . Well, I did cut that tree down in the back yard with my chainsaw yesterday. . . ” Um, yeah. She’s also guilty of climbing up onto her roof (on a ladder when she was home by herself) to check behind the guys who replaced some of the shingles around her chimney. Yep, that’s my Granny! Here we are at her b-day shindig:

To celebrate Granny’s birthday, we partied like it was 1999! Well, um, sort of. We went to an all-you-can-eat buffet and ate cake--her request. We’re party animals, I know. I really wanted to give her something special for her birthday, so I ended up making her some jewelry. Not just any jewelry, though. I made her a necklace that was constructed from her mother’s old jewelry:

For Christmas, I made my grandmother (Granny’s daughter) a necklace and earrings from her grandmother’s (my great-great-grandmother and Granny’s mother) jewelry. Sorry, this is sort of confusing—even for me! Here are some pics:

For Christmas, I made Granny a brooch from her mother's jewelry box:

I just love making jewelry, but it is especially enjoyable to make things that are so meaningful. Do you own jewelry or other objects that hold a special meaning?? Tell me about the item(s) and why it is special to you! : )

Peace Out, Crafters!

  2. Those necklaces are beautiful! I love that they each have a story behind them as well. Makes them shine just a bit brighter, right? :)

  3. Rachel, thanks--I may have to sneak into Granny's jewelry box and "borrow" her new necklace! ; )

  4. Peppermint Plum, thanks for the sweet words. Yes, I love that the pieces have special meaning.

  5. I remember Granny Winn wearing some of these pieces. She would be happy to know that her daughter, grand daughter, great-grand daughter and great, great-grand daughter are still enjoying them. Awesome!

  6. That is amazing!!! so creative!!!

  7. Your jewelry is fabulous! And even more so because it has meaning and memories. Happy Birthday to Granny!

  8. Lisa, thanks so much for the sweet words! Yes, the jewelry really does have special meaning and I plan to make myself something from my great-great-grandmother's jewelry box soon! : )

  9. This is just beautiful jewelry! What a nice way to show a loved one how much you care. Great work :)
