Well, this is it. After several months of pondering the idea of starting my own craft blog, here I am creating my first post. Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved making old things new again and finding unique purposes for everyday stuff. Lately, I’ve been working on the daunting task of organizing my craft studio. It’s so incredibly messy that I’d honestly be embarrassed for a burglar to break in and see it. But even if someone did break in, they’d think somebody had already beat them to it once they took one look at the mess! So, in my attempts to begin organizing my supplies, I decided to convert an old spice rack into a bead organizer. I wish I could tell you I came up with this nifty idea on my own, but I gotta give my Mom the props. I came across this jewel at a yard sale and knew it was perfect for my project:
Do you see the price sticker? One. Stinkin’. Dollar! It was definitely in my budget! However, the style was a little, um, er, Brady Bunchish, and the plastic eagle at the top of the rack didn’t exactly make me feel all warm and fuzzy, if you know what I mean. So, first thing’s first. I performed an “eagleectomy” and cleaned this bad boy up. He was covered in nastiness—a lovely mixture of grease and dust. I wiped down the rack and threw the kiddos (glass jars) into the hot tub (sink of soapy water) to soak for a spell. Check out Rosemary and Ginger hanging out—those two are inseparable.
I decided to paint the rack turquoise since it’s my second favorite color, right behind green. Here are the two shades of turquoise that I used:
I used a “dry brush” technique, which means I dipped my brush in the paint and blotted a good bit of it off. I then painted the rack with a light hand to get a “hit and miss” effect. I mixed the two shades of paint together in some spots to get a mottled look. I allowed the original wood to show through in some places for a rustic feel. Finally, I painted the knobs on the little drawers at the bottom of the rack a shade of red. Please disregard my disgusting-looking painting towel.
After drying the glass bottles, I filled them with beads and placed them on the rack in my craft studio. Pretty sweet, eh? Nifty organization for $1, some paint, and some elbow grease. You can’t beat it with a stick! Holla!
